The legs were crossed for the nailing, with one knee above the other to lock the feet, by use of the cruciate ligaments, in the upright position, to keep the victim litrally ';on his feet'; even if he fell unconscious.
The Jews were not crucified but were made to face only the hanging so their legs were broken and they were dead and buried before sunset because of their religion.
The two thieves were made to face crucifixion on to the end because of the madness of the chief priest to call for the crucifixion for the Messiah, and the law of the hanging of the book of Deuteronomy 21 was broken and the land was defiled and lost to this day.
The American Bible Society's Today's English Version of the New Testament uses ';crucified'; only twice in all four Gospels while other versions use crucified around 38 times.
The Today's English Version replaces the other ';crucifieds'; with ';nailed to the cross';.
Is there some reason for this? And please note the request is for reason and not for guesses?
The Bible puts the end of crucifixion with only the bones left for burial after at least six days.
Which Jesus was crucified then? And why were the legs of one not broken?Do ';crucify'; and ';nail to the cross'; mean the same %26amp; was 1 Jesus crucified without the breaking of his legs?
Bible prophesy foretold that none of Jesus' bones would be broken. As for the terms, they mean basically the same thing.Do ';crucify'; and ';nail to the cross'; mean the same %26amp; was 1 Jesus crucified without the breaking of his legs?
That was part of the plan to fake the guy's death. Even Pilate expressed surprise the guy had ';died'; in one day, when it was really a hypothermic coma. Breaking his legs would have caused suffocation, and ruined the ';get out of town and don't come back'; agreement.
Basically the Romans method of crucifixion was a standard affair and they rarely used nails it seems unless the victim had a following as Jesus did, and then they used nails to prevent anyone attempting a rescue.
I remember reading about one of the Jewish leaders of the revolt having been nailed as Jesus was, generally though they appearto have used rope or leather strips to tie the victims arms and legs.
Also they used a piece of wod called a Sedile which was situated under the victims crotch area to give support.
Jesus did not have His legs broken because He died long before the usual time of most other victims, sometimes the person would take several days to die and the Romans would break their legs to hasten death.
God bless.
crucified means to hang on a cross (ie; a tree) it was a shamefull form of execution and a way rebels were executed. the reason Jesus was made to carry His cross along the road was as a warning to others. Jesus was not the only one to be crucified, crosses lined the roads. hanging is not as people sometimes take it to be, hanging here means to be tied, usually with ropes , to a wooden cross. death would come by suffocation as the entire weight of the hung person would cause such pressure on the chest not allowing the person to breath. the legs would be broken so that the person couldn't push up on their feet as they tried to take the pressure away. therfore death would come quickly. in Jesus case, He gave up His Spirit, His life of His own accord and was alresdy dead so there was no need to break His legs. but they drove a sword through His side anyway, just to make sure.
