Was Jesus nailed or tied to the cross when he was crucified?

Which one do you believe happened? Which one do you think is more realistic? Was Jesus nailed or tied to the cross when he was crucified?
i don't believe his weight (or the weight of any person) could support being just nailed to a cross. the weight of the body would rip the nails through the flesh of the hands if only nails were used to support the body from the hands.

the most likely scenario for crucifixion deaths was that the condemned were tied to the crosses, then nailed so that they would slowly bleed out.

the biblical story relates that the roman guard who speared jesus did so in kindness so as to hasten his death. Was Jesus nailed or tied to the cross when he was crucified?
I suspect it would be both, and because of the political nature of the death of Christ I imagine they would want to make it that way just to make him suffer, and keep his body attached to the cross as long as possible

As to anyone else that was crucified, it could have been one or the other, or both again.

What a horrible way to go!
The act of executing by crucifixion was a method widespread in the ancient world.

That's how they did it back then, and for all criminals condemend to death.

The criminal's hands and feet are bound and nailed to a cross, with the Nail thru the wrists, not the Palm of the hand.
Nailed.

From the Gospel accounts, the victim of crucifixion was 1st flogged or beaten, and had to carry the cross to the public place of execution. The condemned was then stripped of his clothing and was crucified.

Death by crucifixion was agonizing. The victim nailed to the cross through the hands, or wrists and feet, which resulted in very little loss of blood. Because of the nonfatal initial injuries to the condemned, death came slowly by exposure, shock, and aspiration caused by exhaustion, with the weakened victim unable to pull himself up in order to breathe.

I believe that this happened to my Lord Jesus the Christ, and more. Jesus was ridiculed, considered cursed, and the soldiers gambled over His clothing at the foot of His cross, and He was given a vinegar gall to drink when His tongue was stuck to the roof of His mouth..

Jesus shed His blood not only on the cross, but in 7 - different places according to theologians:

1.) In the Garden of Gethsemane.

2.) On the whipping post.

3. ) At the cross..

4.) His pierced hands.

5.) His pierced feet.

6.) His pierced side / heart.

7. ) The crown of thorns placed on His brow.
Nailed

I think it's more realistic to believe he was nailed, because they were quite...brutal...back then. Just think of the atrocities of the Crusades 1000 years later, and multiply that by 5 times. =)

EDIT:

Heh, he was probably tied, too, now that I think about it.... It would have added extra security and held him up longer.
the nails I would imagine would be painful and make someone recoil in hurt, jerking their hands away as soon as possible. If they were tied in place then I think the crucifiers wouldn't have to be in the way of the nailing hammer.

Tied to keep from escaping, nailed for the act.
John 20:24-29 (King James Version)

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God.

29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Conclusion: Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails,

Jesus was nailed to the cross along with our sin. In reality, the sign above His head would have listed the crime for which the condemed was placed on the cross and for Jesus....it essentially listed the sin of the world.

If you want your sin to be included too..check the link below
Hmmm....nailed because that's what the bible says and you know what? The bible is ALWAYS right! *sarcasm* But no, I don't think any is realistic because I don't believe in the existence of Jesus. But if such crucifications held place I believe they must of been tied and nailed. Those bastards....so cruel back then %26gt;%26gt;
Nailed. The bible says so. No mention of ropes on his wrists and feet. The only reason that you see ropes in films of the crucifixion is because no actor is going to be actually nailed to a cross.
Nailing was not uncommon at the time. According to Roman historical records, he was executed for multiple murder, a very serious crime, which would probably have got hi the nail treatment.
Tied. Maybe nailed also.
According to the Bible He was nailed. So I believe He was nailed to the cross...
He was nailed. Just look at the Bible to find out. It says it plainly.
At that time of history, all executed on cross(stake), were nailed to it
Both. First He was nailed then He was tied just in case the nails didn't hold Him on the cross.
Realistically, he would've been tied and nailed to the cross by his wrists, not his hands.
I say tied.
Who,cares ?
dude, i was barbed wired to the cross
translation from Quran ch 4:

156 And because of their (Jews) disbelief and uttering against Maryam (Mary السلام عليهما) a grave false charge (that she has committed illegal sexual intercourse);

157 And because of their saying (in boast), ';We killed Messiah 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), the Messenger of Allah,'; - but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them [the resemblance of 'Îsa (Jesus) was put over another man (and they killed that man)], and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no (certain) knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not [i.e. 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary) عليهما السلام]:

158 But Allah raised him ['Îsa (Jesus)] up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and he عليه السلام is in the heavens). And Allah is Ever All-Powerful, All-Wise.

159 And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) but must believe in him ['Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), as only a Messenger of Allah and a human being] before his ['Îsa (Jesus) عليه السلام) or a Jew's or a Christian's] death (at the time of the appearance of the angel of death). And on the Day of Resurrection, he ['Îsa (Jesus)] will be a witness against them.
