Which LAW was nailed to the cross?

';Blotting out the handwriting of ORDINANCES that was against us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to the cross.';

Colossians 2:14

(Ordinances refers to the various laws and decrees of the Jewish legal system.)

';Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ORDINANCES; for to make in Himself of twain one new man, so making peace.'; Eph.2:15

So....if the ordinances were nailed to the cross that would mean the ten commandments were not......correct?

If you disagree please give Bible proof for your argument...Which LAW was nailed to the cross?
Hi Beth!

A certain law of ordinances was nailed to the Cross. This was theceremonial law of types and shadows which pointed forward to the death of Jesus, and which had no further meaning beyond the cross. This is why Paul said it was contrary to the Christian. The rent veil in the temple at the death of christ(Matthew 27:51) indicated the end of that ordinance animal sacrifice system and abolished the law of commandments contained in ordinances.

This is why paul wrote Colossians 2:16 that we are no longer judged by meat offerings, drink offerings and sabbath days ';which are a shadow of things to come.'; These shadowy sabbaths are described in Leviticus 23:24-27. They fell on certain set days of the month. A different day of the week each year, yet they were called sabbaths. But please observe in verse 37 how they were distinguished from the weekly sabbath(Ten Commandment law). ';These are the feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice and drink offerings, every thing upon his day, BESIDE THE SABBATHS OF THE LORD...';

In conclusion, Colossians 2:16 is completely cleared up. The law of the yearly sabbaths WAS NAILED TO THE CROSS WITH ALL IT';S MEAT AND DRINK OFFERINGS, but the great ten commandment law with it's WEEKLY SABBATH WAS NOT AFFECTED BY THAT ';blotting out of ordinances';.

I hope this comment help to clear up controversy surrounding this verse.

Good post. Sorry for being a bit lengthy.Which LAW was nailed to the cross?
1 Corinthians and Colossians both say the sabbath observance is over. So that takes care of number 4.

Jesus said hang the law and prophets on loving God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and loving others as yourself. That takes care of the rest.

We're not under the 10 commandments or the Jewish OT ordinances. We're under grace.
Actually Jesus replaced the whole law with two simple commandments:

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The first of these two actually summarizes the first FOUR of the Decalogue while the second of these two summarizes the last SIX of the Decalogue.

GBY. Hope this helps.
you see whats funny, is that to Judaism, the law of the old testament, is not a condemning, damning evidence of how insufficient we are, but a guide to how to become better, how to be as God wishes us to be and to improve ourselves.

thus, it makes no sense to do away with it...

if you look at this a different way, it could be intepereted to be saying that it only ';abolishes'; the talmud and the rulings of the sanhedrin, I'd say on the assertion that the sanhedrin had become corrupt or something, and was no longer faithfully fulfilling its role, and thus its rulings had become invalidated.

but this inteperetation still leaves the 613 laws of the bibical text (not the talmudic law)

and of course I'm not sure how valid the assertion against the sanhedrin would be, nor that it woudl be neccesary to throw the entire library of sanhedrin rulings and inteperetations.
Jesus was the ultimate and perfect sacrifical Lamb. It was the cerememonial laws that were abolished.

The Ten Commandments are the moral law. They still stand. For those who uphold a Sunday Sabbath based on NT teachings, my arguement is not with you, for you still recongize a Sabbath.

Jesus, Himself said: John 7 :16

My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

Jesus did not come to REPLACE God but to RECONCILE us to Him.

Jesus condensed the commandments into two categories, He did not abolish the 10. We are still expected to place God first, refrain from taking His Name in vain, avoid idols and graven images, theft, murder, coveting, false witness, adultery, and we are still to honor our parents, and observe a Sabbath.
That would be the laws of moses aka The Laws of God aka the ten commandments and all the ordinances that moses and subsuquent generations came up with until the time Christ was crucified on the cross. The ten commandments were the original laws God gave. The rest were ordinaces based on the ten commandments. Check the link below I hope it helps.

Chris
read the previous four verses, you may better understand the concept Paul is trying to pass along.

if you're obedient, and dead to sin, you are under grace.
The Law of the Sacrifice. Jesus died once and for all and that is why all we need to do is believe in Him and trust Him as our Lord and Savior and He will save us from our sins.
scholar Bibles can help you out...im tired but mine says we can enjoy our new life in Christ cuz we have joined him in his death and resurrection..
no, when Christ died the New Covenant (hence the title, the New Testament) was establishing. The Old Covenant, the one God gave to Abraham, had ended. Christ's death and resurrection gave us as believers the privilege of going to God directly and repenting just by going to God through prayer.
the 10 commandments and about 600 laws more in Leviticus including Tithing by the way, that is why you never see in the NT that christians gave tithing but gifts, not both thing just gifts.
You are correct. The Ten Commandments were not nailed to the cross. A lot of other things that people believe were nailed to the cross were not, as well.
