Why did Jesus have his feet nailed to the cross as well?

I thought crucifixion works by simply just hanging people up by their hands or arms and over a couple of days, the spine slowly separates. Why nail their feet? And also, doesn鈥檛 the story go the Romans placed a block under his feet as well so that he could support some of his weight?

This never made sense to me, because I remember as a child, the scripture teacher telling the class about this. She said that if the people weren鈥檛 dying painfully enough, the Romans would get a club and break their legs. If this is true, then why bother nailing their feet? BTW, don鈥檛 you think this is a little sadistic to be telling a child? Why did Jesus have his feet nailed to the cross as well?
Actually, the idea was that the lungs would begin to fill with fluid, due to the inability to hold oneself erect and cough. If the victims were particularly strong, the centurions would break their legs, and they could no longer push against the footblock, and drown. The footblock was included to let them evade drowning for a lengthened period of time, thus prolonging their suffering. Longinus, the centurion who pierced Jesus with his sword, did so to alleviate this fluid buildup in Jesus' lungs.

The whole concept of torture is sadistic. Next to the lack of proper education and training, it is mankind's greatest sin.

Nonetheless it is one of the plagues promised by God for the failure to keep His laws and His commandments. Why did Jesus have his feet nailed to the cross as well?
Mat 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

The very end of your question actually makes sense...
helps support the body and puts more strain on the

diaphram, making it more difficult to breath and more

miserable.
first of all , Jesus' legs were not broken- which fulfilled the prophecy in the OT of the Messiah death by Crucifixion. His feet were nailed too so that it would be hard for Him to push up for air, however, the scriptures say there is no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of blood. About being a little sadistic to be telling a child? My 2 children understood the death of Jesus at a very young age- 5 years old a matter of fact - they both accepted Christ- they may not have understand the whole crucifixion then, but they understood the concept of Jesus dying for them.
The answer is, that the feet would help hold up the body and cause slow suffocation. The thought that Jesus did this to save them, is a lot more comforting.
Reading about this still makes me feel sick to my stomach---If there is a God, I am hoping he will speak through this Q and A to some of the parents reading this----and give them the common sense to shield their children from it----Peace.
No, otherwise the person's hands would split, since the palm isn't solid, and the person would fall off the cross. Also, the cause of death for these people was asphixiation, because you have to pull yourself up by the nails in your hands, which causes you to have to place pressure on the feet that are nailed. They therefore broke the legs not to cause more suffering, but to speed the process of dying (albeit dying in a lot of pain and torment).
Never happened. But yea its really depressing to tell kids such horrific fairy tales.
Made the story of his suffering more horrific, shock and awe instead of substance...
They die of asphyxiation, cutting off of the airway. Someone crucified has to constantly be pushing themselves into a standing position to stay alive.

That is why they broke their legs so they couldn't push up anymore and would suffocate, they do this too speed it up.
The roman method of Crucifixion =

the nailing of the wrists to the cross member would cause the dislocation the shoulders, stretching the rib cage which made breathing very difficult. the feet nailed together was to facilitate by pushing up with the nailed feet in order to breath and cause more pain, along with the whipping injuries across the back and legs which was dragged across the rough wood with each attempt at breathing...through blood and fluid loss, shock, the body was fighting to maintain fluid level and would go into cardiac arrest...and death....

Jesus died for our sins...he took the cross in our place....

for a very young child...he stood in the corner for what we did wrong...
The way you die on the cross is by suffication. Your feet being nailed makes it painful to push up and take a breath, they broke their legs to stop them pushing up and breathing.

Yes it is a little sadistic, but when appreciate that Jesus did that to save us from sin, we have a different perspective on it....
