It is quite possible that there were none. In most cases the Romans used to crucify their victims by simply tighten the ropes around their wrists and ankles. The cause of the death with crucifixion is not bleeding rather than inhibition of regular breathing. Victims basically soffocated after hours of suffer. It was horrible to die on a cross even without those nails.
