I believe you're thinking of one of the thieves who was crucified with Jesus. Tradition has given this man the name of 'Dismas,'; sometimes referred to as 'The Good Thief.'
One of the thieves executed with Jesus rebuked his fellow criminal, who was joining in the railing and mockery, reminding him that they were receiving justice for their misdeeds. He also asked Jesus to 'remember me when you come into your kingdom.' Jesus replied that he would 'be with me this day in paradise.'
The thief had no Christian faith, since the church was not established until Pentecost.
