Why did God butcher thousands and then nail his only son to a cross?

It's a story. Perhaps a parable. It is not, nor was it ever, reality. I don't believe there is a higher power in existence that would be so bloodthirsty and hate-filled and then tie it up nicely with a bow called ';love';.Why did God butcher thousands and then nail his only son to a cross?
John 3:16-17 (New International Version)

16';For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.Why did God butcher thousands and then nail his only son to a cross?
not everything is a result of God's will. It's certainly not God's will that little babies suffer and die and children get molested and the innocent suffer.
';Remember religious people claim adamantly that everything is a result of God's will.';

no we don't.
He simply allows catastrophies to happen, simply to test us. To see if we would still serve him.
Because he's an evil b*st*ard.
